HPV vaccine against cervical cancer

31 March, Kathmandu : The government is to vaccinate girls aged 9-13 years with human papillomavirus (HVP) to control cervical cancer.

WHOAccording to the World Health Organisation (WHO), girls between 9-13 years could be saved from cervical cancer as they are immunized with the HPV vaccine twice at the interval of six months.

South Asian countries except India have started the vaccination whereas Japan, USA, Canada and South Africa, among other countries have already brought the HVP into practice.

The Ministry of Health and Population is preparing to begin the vaccination programme in Chitwan and Kaski districts from this year.

Gavi Alliance, an international organisation working in the same field, has pledged financial assistance for the vaccination.

Immunization expert at WHO Dr Santosh Gurung said some 15,000 girls would be immunized with HPV vaccine in the two districts and the Ministry would extend the immunization programme in other districts.

According to the Department of Health Services, some 2,500 new cases of cervical cancer have witnessed in the country every year.

Representatives from Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, WHO, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and United Nations Children’s Fund are participating in a four-day-long meeting organized by the WHO in Kathmandu.

Nepal Representative of WHO, Dr Lin Aung, said that it was necessary to take the vaccination programme at communities as the WHO has certified the HPV for the control and prevention of cervical cancer.

Similarly, Director General of the Department Dr Senendra Upreti said the number of women suffering from the cervical cancer has increased as compared to the breast cancer. RSS
