ICNR in progress amid high enthusiasm

25 June, Kathmandu : The International Conference on Nepal’s Reconstruction organized with the aim of garnering foreign assistance for the reconstruction of the earthquake hit-areas in the country is underway here amidst high enthusiasm.

Foreign Ministers and representatives of different donor agencies are participating in the conference and have pledged support for the country’s post-quake reconstruction.

Indian Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj has announced to provide assistance of around Rs 200 billions to help Nepal’s efforts for post-quake reconstruction, recovery and rebuilding and even for the development of the agriculture, roads, transport and hydropower’s as well.

Similarly, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that the Chine has highly prioritized the bilateral relations with Nepal and has pledged to extend around Rs 76.2 billion to support Nepal’s bid for reconstruction, recovery and rebuilding in the aftermath of the earthquake.

Stating that China has accorded high priority to its longstanding relations with Nepal, he said a financial assistance of Rs 1 billion would be provided to support Nepal’s efforts for post-quake reconstruction, recovery and rebuilding.

Likewise, he said an aid of Rs 75.2 billion would be given to Nepal for the implementation of physical infrastructure focused project in five development region. The support amount will be provided up to 2018 AD, he clarified.

In the inaugural session, Foreign Minister of Norway Borge Brende, Minister for Disaster Management of Sri Lanka, AHM Fowsie, Finance Minister of Bangladesh Abul Maal A. Muhth, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Minoru Kiuchi, Under Secretary General of the United Nations Gyan Chandra Acharya, President of Asian Development Bank Takehiko Nakao EU Development Commissioner Neven Mimica among others participated in the first session of the conference.

On the occasion, Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki Mun, World Bank chief Yong Kim had delivered the video message to the conference.

The Finance Minister Dr Ram Sharan Mahat has chaired the second session of the conference and Vice-chairman of the National Planning Commission (NPC) Prof Dr Govinda Raj Pokhrel submitted the PDNA report.

Over 250 representatives are participating the conference of them 23 are from multilateral, 40 from bilateral and other from personal level are participating the conference. Bilateral and multilateral agencies like the European Union, International Monetary Fund, International Organization of Migration, the UN Women, United Nations Development Programme, United Nations Economic, Social and Culture Organization, United Nations Fund for Population Activities, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, UNICEF, UN Habitat, World Health Organization, World Bank, Asian Development Bank, Food and Agriculture Organization re participating the conference.

The conference will conclude today itself.

On the occasion, former Prime Ministers, Ministers, chiefs of the constitutional commissions, senior leaders, chief secretary, secretaries, and chiefs of diplomatic missions are participating in the conference.
