UML not to join new government if Oli does not become PM

Kathmandu, October 2

CPN-UML has ‘received information’ that power centres are conspiring in their bid to prevent UML chief KP Sharma Oli from becoming the prime minister. Aware of this, the UML has informed parties interested in government formation that it will not join the new government without Oli becoming the PM.

Bishnu-PaudelUML deputy general secretary Bishnu Poudel has been holding informal talks with parties on the issue of government formation. “There’s no question of any other figure heading the government,” Poudel said during an interview with Online Khabar, citing an earlier agreement to let Oli lead such a government.

He made it clear that UML will not join the new government if conspiracies are hatched to scuttle the agreement.

Responding to a question, Poudel said the Parliament’s priority is to choose a consensus prime minister within a week after start of its session or conduct voting for election of the PM with majority. The parliament session has begun, now the process for PM’s election will move forward, he said.

In response to a query about the situation in Tarai-Madhesh and its impact in the capital, the UML leader said the agitating parties should come forward for talks. We can discuss the demands, he said, noting that the constitution itself is open on amendment.
