Kathmandu, October 4

Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala has turned down the idea of forming a national consensus government under the leadership of the CPN-UML. He has proposed forming a majority government under his own leadership, consigning the UML to the opposition bench.

Koirala, the incumbent, turned down UCPN-Maoist Chair Prachanda’s proposal to form a new government under UML Chair KP Sharma Oli, Naya Patrika has reported, quoting a source at PM’s Office Residence in Baluwatar. Dahal had floated the proposal during his meeting with Koirala at the latter’s residence in Baluwatar on Saturday.

Prachanda had pointed that a UML-headed national government should replace the present government as per an informal understanding reached while signing the 16-point agreement. On his part, Koirala said the Congress should form the next government, asking the Maoist party for support, according to the source.

“Prachanda pointed that a national unity government is a must for constitution amendment. He pointed that there was a tacit understanding to form a UML-headed government during the signing of the 16-point pact,” a source present at the meeting said. But Koirala was adamant on not letting the UML lead the next government.

Koirala seemed bent on forming the next government under his leadership, this source noted.
