No regrets for voting in favour of Congress PM candidate, says UDMF

Kathmandu, October 13. United Democratic Madheshi Front said it has no regrets for taking part in the election for Prime Minister.

Mahantha Thakur, Chair of UDMF constituent Tarai Madhesh Democratic Party, said at a press conference held on Tuesday after the UDMF meeting: “We exercised our right by voting, no one forced us to take part in the election. We do not regret our move.”

At Sunday’s House election for the post of prime minister, UDMF had voted for Nepali Congress candidate Sushil Koirala. .

The UDMF had left the Constituent Assembly when it was about to promulgate a constitution, expressing its dissatisfaction over several issues like province delineation.

Many political watchers say that UDMF, by casting vote in the election for PM, has embraced the constitution.

On the other hand, UDMF has drawn fire for casting votes in favour of Sushil Koirala and faces charges of committing treason against the southern plains. Critics point that the Koirala-led government had suppressed the Madheshi Movement, resulting in the death of more than 50 people during the movement. Protesters have burnt the effigies of Madheshi leaders for this act.

Upendra Yadav, chair of UDMF constituent Federal Socialist Forum Nepal, described the ruling coalition comprising the CPN-UML, UCPN-Maoist and the RPP-Nepal, as a coalition of ultra-leftist-royalist and royalist forces.

“This (the UML-Maoist-RPP-Nepal combine) is a coalition of forces that are against the Madhesh Movement. It is a coalition comprising forces that snatch people’s rights. We used Madheshi people’s votes against it.”

Madheshi leaders said they have neither accepted the constitution nor will they call off the Madhesh Movement.

Yadav said: “We will not accept this constitution. We will make this movement (Madhesh Movement) stronger.”

Major parties have also accepted that there are shortcomings in the constitution, he said, adding: “Our struggle will continue unless the constitution is rewritten or amended to incorporate the demands raised during the movement.” Yadav pointed that the new constitution has snatched rights that the interim constitution had ensured, describing the charter as regressive.
