Trilateral meet ends on inconclusive note, offering not even a ray of hope

Kathmandu, November 30. The three-party talks involving the United Democratic Madheshi Front, the ruling coalition and the Nepali Congress ended on an inconclusive note on Sunday, with the participants not even entering the issue of province delineation.

Thus, the meeting dashed hopes of early resolution of the protracted crises that the country has been facing due to the Madhesh Movement and the Indian blockade.

At the meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Official Residence in Baluwatar, CPN-UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal proposed putting the seven-province federal model on hold.

Discussions regarding Nepal’s proposal are on within the party fold, a source said.

Nepal’s proposal states that resolving the issue of province delineation (redrawing of provincial boundaries, a UDMF demand) is impossible despite a few leaders’ desire. So, for now, let’s put the seven-province model on hold. Let’s sort out the issue at the political and expert levels. And let’s amend the (recently-issued) constitution to resolve other issues.

But the meeting did not touch upon Nepal’s proposal.

At the trilateral talks, UDMF condemned the government for suppressing its protest.
