EC rules out challenges on poll process

SEPT 11, KATHMANDU. Chief Election Commissioner (EC) Nilkantha Upreti on Wednesday said that the election process would help to move ahead after the agreement among parties on the strength of upcoming Constituent Assembly (CA) would get legal status.

“Though the Election Commission has learned about the political party’s decision to increase the strength of CA from 491- 601 through the media, it should be given legal status to act accordingly,” Upreti said while talking to reporters today.

The High Level Political Committee (HLPC) had recently decided to increase the CA strength as per the demands of dissenting parties including Federal Socialist Party and Sanghiya Loktantrik Morcha.

Regarding the poll boycott threat issued by the CPN-Maoist, he said the process of party registration has been already elapsed as per the Act. He, however, said that constitutional arrangements can be made to bring them into poll process till the printing of the ballot paper.

Talking to journalists, Upreti, however, ruled out any additional challenges during the election due to the threats of election boycotts by some parties.RSS
