People happy over CIAA activities

AUG 25, KATHMANDU. General public have expressed happiness over the latest activities of the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) aimed at controlling corruption.

People have given positive reactions about the latest CIAA move through different social networks like Facebook and Twitter, newspapers and television channels.

The CIAA, the state’s anti-graft body, arrested employees of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) including Executive Director Rameshwor Yadav for their alleged involvement in the financial irregularities in the purchase of transformers.

Likewise, over 30 employees of Department of Foreign Employment and Department of Irrigation were arrested on Friday on the charge of illegally granting work permit to abroad job seekers and producing their fake passports.

In the same connection, proprietors of three manpower companies were held Saturday on the accusation of abetting the employees.

Dhanapati Koirala from Kawasoti, Nawalparasi said such move of CIAA is a welcome step. He termed the CIAA action as ‘a light shower’ in desert. He made his views public through Kantipur daily’s readers forum.

The Transparency International, a body fighting against corruption has placed Nepal in 139th position out of 176 countries, in view of corruption. The TI Report 2013 states that situation of good governance is very poor in Nepal.

Secretary at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers on August 18 through the Sajha Sawal Programme of Kantipur Television claimed that only bureaucracy was not responsible for increasing corruption in the country.

The practice of offering bribe and accepting it has promoted corruption in the country, he said. Prior to this, former Prime Ministers Madhav Kumar Nepal and Dr Baburam Bhattarai from the same programme accused bureaucrats of going against the rule of law.

Social worker from Kavre, Haribhakta Bhochhibhoya said lack of working willpower within leaders and culture of providing patronage to corrupts, has weakened rule of law in the country.

Facebook user Jayaram Baniya from Australia shares that government employees indulging in corruption has frustrated him. Nepali people are being cheated from dillydallying in delivering of public services and use of middlemen for asking bribe.

Likewise, Facebook user Shambhu Thapa from Japan shares his opinion that people amassing property through the abuse of authority should be immediately brought to book.

It may be noted that political leaders Jay Prakash Prasad Gupta, Khum Bahadur Khadka, Govinda Raj Joshi and Ganesh Lama have been found guilty of corruption.

Some of them completed jail sentences whereas some others are facing action. The CIAA proving former Finance Minister the late Rabindranath Sharma corrupt shows that no one can escape law even after death.

People promoting extravagance in the name of social customs and culture have moved back due to the CIAA move. People are hopeful that rule of law will be established if the CIAA continues to keep its eyes on corrupts in all sectors. RSS
