Bara, October 8

The Indian blockade has farmers of Bara district worried. The embargo has caused a severe shortage of petroleum products, meaning they will find it hard to harvest paddy using tractors and threshing machines.

Duryodhan Chaudhari, a farmer from Itaharvelahi, Bara, says: “Because of the ongoing Tarai-Madhesh movement and the Indian blockade, we have not been able to harvest our crops and irrigate our fields.” He expressed worry that they may have to die of hunger.

“Tractor operators say they don’t have diesel to transport paddy home from the fields for winnowing,” he says.

Ironically, the United Madheshi Democratic Front has been stating a movement in the plains with the aim of empowering local people. The Indian government has imposed a blockade to make the government address the front’s demands. According to a government forecast, paddy production will decrease this year due to the shutdown in the Tarai.

“Gods have stopped rain and leaders have stopped the supply of petroleum products, meaning we can draw water for irrigation by operating diesel-run pumps,” Idris Miya, a farmer from Surahi, says. “I have planted paddy in 15 kattha of land and need 1,000 litre diesel to irrigate one kattha. But I’m not getting diesel anywhere.’

Local people had started bringing diesel and petrol in jerry cans, in vain. They lament that UDMF cadres would seize their small consignments, spill it on the ground or set the consignments on fire. These days Indian petrol pump operators do not give oil to Nepalis, says Miya.
