Regmi stresses on rural development

SEPT 2, KATHMANDU. Chairman of Council of Ministers Khil Raj Regmi has said stressed the need of developing rural parts in the country not of Singha Durbar.

Addressing the 30th meeting of National Development Problems Resolution Committee organised by the National Planning Commission today, Chairman Regmi said development of rural areas should be realised in the livelihood of poor people not in the papers.

The development projects should be prepared by reaching the doorstep of people not by sitting inside the Singha Durbar, he said.

“Singha Durbar is just a venue for collecting funds for development and seeking solutions to problems”, he argued.

He further stressed the government employees should go to the deputed sites for the implementation of development projects aim at improving living standard of the poor.

According to information made available in the meeting, as many as 451 projects were implemented in the fiscal year 2069-70 BS and out of 282 projects listed in the first priority, 195 have witnessed over 80 per cent progress. Of 17 projects of national pride, the number of projects gaining over 80 per cent progress is only eight.

On the occasion, Chairman Regmi directed the ministries concerned not to make any delay in the completion of projects of national pride and those put in the first priority.The committee is regarded as the supreme body to settle the problems seen in course of implementation of development projects. The meeting takes place in an interval of every four months.

Minister for Home Affairs Madhav Ghimire, Minister for Urban Development Chhabiraj Panta and Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Ram Kumar Shrestha apprised the meeting about the implementation status of the major projects being implemented by the respective ministries.

According to Minister Shrestha, the construction of Melamchi Drinking Water Project is taking place rapidly.

Commission Vice-Chairman Dr Rabindra Kumar Shakya briefed the meeting about the achievements on millennium development goals, three-year plan and the projects of national pride.

Chief Secretary Leela Mani Poudyal urged the bodies concerned to complete the road- widening task in the Kathmandu valley on time, to be serious to avert possible rise in the duration of power outage and to address the problem of staff crisis in the rural parts.

Commission Member Secretary Yubraj Bhusal said the meeting was very important in finding solutions to problems surfaced in the implementation of development projects. RSS
