Election alliance has become a far cry

AUG 29, KATHMANDU. Nepali politics has raised a serious agenda among political parties with the nearing of the CA election date.

Almost all political parties have intensified their talks proposing for election alliance in their respective central committees in a formal way.

The political parties have proposed such agendas in their central committees in view of getting election result on their side.

However, the alliance of conflicting forces on the basis of maximum understanding regarding the election issues among the political parties, especially, for the senior leaders of the major political parties seems rare and almost impossible, said leaders and cadres of the different political parties.

They said though the agenda gets attention on the eve of every election but result of such efforts has not come as expected during the five-decade-long journey of Nepali politics.

It has been difficult to believe that there would be political alliance among the conflicting parties as the tendency of presenting rebel candidate from the same party against the official candidate has been set up in our society.

The political parties had discussed for election alliance even in the General Election of 2015 B.S but it has not been seen till date.

Majority of senior leaders of different nine political parties contributed in the front against the Rana Regime were defeated, except for BP Koirala, the then President of the Nepali Congress, when the election alliance was not brought into force.

Similarly, it had been discussed for making election alliance for the then President of Nepali Congress, Krishna Prasad Bhattarai, General Secretary of the CPN (UML), Madan Bhandari, Chairman of CPN-UML Manmohan Adhikari, and Girija Prasad Koirala of NC, but it turned in vain, say political critics.

The talks for election alliance was shadowed in the first Constituent Assembly (CA) election due to the leaders’ behavior of evaluating themselves stronger than others, as a result, the first CA was dissolved without writing constitution.

It is learnt that the leaders have intensified their talks and interactions among the political parties that are close by principle for election alliance.

The Federal Democratic Republican Alliance (FDRA), an alliance between the Unified CPN (Maoist), United Democratic Madhesi Morcha and some fringe parties that were for constituting federal states on the basis of ethnicity had been passive after some parties have difference of opinion in the alliance of late. The alliance was in a way formed for the election rehearsal.

The Rastriya Prajatantra Party has proposed for democratic election alliance, on Wednesday, among the democratic forces stressing on the need of standing as the democratic force in a faction in the CA election.

Similarly, the UCPN (Maoist) has also proposed alliance for CA election among the political parties that have similar agendas regarding the federalism in its central committee meeting, formally.

The UCPN (Maoist) has brought the proposal to make an intensive framework for the limitation of election alliance in the CA election, said Spokesperson of the UCPN (Maoist), Agni Sapkota.

Likewise, Nepali Congress leader Arjun Narsingh KC said the concept of election alliance was not bad. The notion of election alliance was raised with a view to taking senior leaders in the second CA and promulgate the constitution as per the public desire. It was very practical and positive, Singh added.

The election alliance to take senior leaders representing their parties in the CA was necessary and positive in principle, said UML leader Pradeep Gyawali.

The CA meetings could not be made as a place of discussion when senior leaders of major political parties were not present in the first CA. When the senior leaders are taken to CA, they would get ownership, and the work and interest would also be effective, UML leader Gyawali said.

The Madhes centric political parties have already forwarded discussions for the past sometime in forging election unity among them.

The Terai Madhesh Loktantrik Party and Madhesi Janadikar Forum had already agreed to form election alliance.

Co-chairman of TMLP Hridayesh Tripathi said the issue of election alliance was linked with the political culture that whether it is for overall parties or for senior leaders, the political parties have failed to establish culture of election alliance though it was positive.

It is an excellent part of democratic culture to have unity among the parties in the election at a time when the trend of defeating other party’s senior leadership is flourished, he added. RSS
