Probe Rangeli killings, punish the guilty: NHRC to Oli govt

Kathmandu, January 22. The National Human Rights Commission has demanded an independent probe intoThursday’s police firing during a UDMF protest in Rangeli that killed three people. It has also demanded action against the guilty.

NHRCBlaming the incident on security lapse of the local administration, it asked the government to provide adequate compensation to the deceased’s families and free treatment to the injured.

In  a press release on Friday, spokesperson for the NHRC, Mohana Ansari, asked the government to conduct a probe, take action against the guilty as per the law, provide adequate compensation to the bereaved families and arrange free treatment to the injured.

Death of people in police firing is against international human rights norms and values, the NHRC said. The rights commission is conducting an on-site monitoring of the incident.

It called concerned bodies to safeguard constitutionally-guaranteed rights to hold peaceful assemblies and stage protests, the release states. Thursday’s police firing killed Draupadi Devi Chaudhary (60) of Chopada Tole, Rangeli-4, Mahadev Rishidev of Bardanga-2 and Shivu Majhi of Dayaniya-9.

It urged the government and agitating parties to end the ongoing standoff through talks.
