This Dashain, fight blockade with ostrich meat

AstrijThere’s surely going to be a shortage of mutton during this Dashain, with the India-imposed blockade going on in full force and political strife in the Tarai continuing.

For coping with this shortage of meat, preparations are afoot in Rupandehi district to sell ostrich meat, Naya Patrika reports.

Krishna Prasad Poudel, chair of Meat Producers’ Association (Rupandehi), says they are in no position to supply enough goats in Butwal and adjoining areas due to the Indian blockade, the Tarai movement and a shortage of petroleum products.

“Unlike in the past, we will not run ‘meat’ markets to sell goats and sheep,” according to Poudel.

India supplies 75 per cent of meat consumed in Nepal. Poudel says they will bring goats and sheep from Surkhet and Mustang if they can manage oil for their transportation. With meat shortage almost certain, black marketing of meat has already begun in Butwal.
