Bhaktapur becoming transit point for small arms

29 Jan, Bhaktapur: The Metropolitan Police Circle Thimi recently arrested two people with a Sixer Revolver and a bullet for it.

Ajaya Lama, 18, of Chisapani-7, Kavre and Milan Tamang, 24, from Mahadevtar, Kavre were arrested on their way to Pepsicola from Bhaktapur, concealing the small arms in their scooter.

In last September, Police arrested Sitaram Tilat, 41, of Lamatar, Lalitpur and Lokendra Awale, 35, of the same locality with a gun and ten bullets.

Police here have arrested five people with four set of arms this year.

Similarly, Police had registered a case under Arms and Ammunition Act against eight people who were arrested with seven set of small arms from various places in Bhaktapur last year.

Though there have been repeated incidents of confiscation of small arms and ammunition in Bhaktapur, no criminal activities are reported with the use of small arms.

Hence the repeated confiscation of small arms with no any consequences of the arms in the locality shows that Bhaktapur is becoming a transit point for small arms and ammunition, lately.

According to Bikash Shrestha, the Superintendent of Police at Bhaktapur Metropolitan Police, police although have been arresting people with small arms in higher rate, they have not been able to crack the purpose of people carrying arms.

Often, the arrested in their statement deny their ownership of the arms and are found citing that they were given the arms by someone to keep it for a while.

There has been no any big incidents of looting, robbery and rape among others reported in the district using small arms like gun, pistols and revolvers,” SP Shrestha told RSS, arguing that it showed the place was becoming a transit point to ferry small arms. RSS
