Bara, October 7 . Cadres of the United Democratic Madheshi Front brutally attacked Sub-inspector Krishna Basnet at Jitpur, Bara, today. In ensuing clashes, more than a dozen protesters and police personnel sustained injuries. Police fired eight rounds of teargas canisters to bring the situation under control.
A dispute had ensued after Area Police Office, Jitpur seized petrol smuggled into Nepal from a bordering Indian town. Clash ensued after police, instead of heeding protesters’ call and disposing of oil on the road, tried to take it to the police office.
The cadres thrashed Basnet, doused him with petrol and set him aflame. They also vandalised a vehicle of the police office.
Inspector at the Area Police Office, Simra, Purushottam Khadka, said fighting took place after protesters resorted to vandalism and arson. He said more than a dozen protesters and police personnel sustained injured in the fighting.
It’s learnt that bus operators and hoteliers had been smuggling petroleum products into Nepal from Raxaul and selling the same at exorbitant rates. Bara police have launched a crackdown on smugglers.
