Kathmandu, October 15. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has reminded India of landlocked countries’ transit right. Addressing the Parliament for the first time in capacity of Prime Minister, Oli said Nepal has taken the ‘undeclared blockade’, which India imposed after promulgation of a constitution, seriously.

“We are serious about a complex situation along the Nepal-India border, the undeclared blockade and obstructions in the supply of essentials like oil,” he said on Thursday. Unobstructed transit movement is a sovereign right of landlocked countries as per international conventions, he said. “There should be no obstruction in cross-border movement of goods as per bilateral trade agreement,” he said.

Oli noted that a complex situation along the border and resulting obstructions in the supply of goods have been affecting Nepalis at a time when festivals are around the corner. He commended Nepalis for showing patience in times of crisis. Oli informed that his government has taken political and diplomatic initiatives to ease supply of essentials like petroleum products. He said Foreign Minister Kamal Thapa is leaving for India to solve a difficult situation in the Tarai.

Oli recalled tortuous times spent in jail during his political struggle and his personal struggle against poor health. He thanked the country and the people for elevating him to the post of PM. “It’s my duty to channelise my energies for the welfare of the country and the people.”

Oli said he will govern on the basis of political understanding. “My focus will be on broader political understanding and talks,” he said. The PM pledged to hold talks with parties not represented in Parliament and reach understanding with them.

Delhi insists there’s no blockade

Meanwhile, India’s Ministry of External Affairs has responded to Prime Minister KP Oli’s statement that India was imposing an unofficial blockade in Nepal. The ministry’s spokesperson said at a regular press meet that India has not imposed any blockade, and more than 730 trucks have entered Nepal from India in the last 24 hours.
