Kathmandu, October 8. Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala has denied the existence of the so-called ‘gentleman’s understanding’. Koirala, speaking at the NC Central Working Committee meeting in Baluwatar today, floated two alternatives regarding the formation of a new government.
Breaking silence on the understanding, he said it does not exist.
CPN-UML and UCPN-Maoist have claimed that the gentleman’s understanding, ‘reached while signing a 16-point agreement’ that installed Sushil Koirala as prime minister, pledged to make UML President KP Oli prime minister after constitution promulgation. At public gatherings and all-party meetings, Maoist Chair Prachanda has acknowledged reaching the understanding. According to Prachanda, Koirala had, on several occasions, assured Oli on implementation of the understanding.
Two alternatives
At the meeting, Koirala floated two alternatives for government formation. The options are: Going for a UML-led government or forming a Congress-headed government. He sought CWC members’ opinion on these alternatives.
Leaders have started voicing their opinion on the alternatives after CWC members said they should speak first.
